Our student spotlight this week is Mary Mulligan. Mary is a sophomore in Chemical Engineering from Dyer, Indiana. She says Purdue was an obvious choice for her, one of her reasons being that it is in-state. However, she doesn’t intend to dwell among the corn fields in Indiana for much longer. Mary hopes to attend a graduate school in Europe. Several potential locations include Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, or even Iceland. Upon further probing, Mary shared more of her future ambitions.

After [grad school], I want to live abroad for some time. In a perfect world, I would be able to hop around from one country to another every few years, each time getting to experience a new culture and way of life! We’ll see what happens!

If all goes as planned, Mary is sure to have many incredible stories and experiences to share in the future. However, for the time being, we still have her on campus, and she is contributing to the Purdue and Honors communities in many ways.

Mary is in Purdue Student Government, the Sophomore Leadership Learning Community, Society of Women Engineers, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the Women in Engineering Mentor/Mentee Program. Mary is also involved in undergraduate research with Dr. Allen Garner in the NUC Department. What’s more, she is a peer mentor for FYE and is training to be an Emily Mauzy Vogel (EMV) small-group facilitator.

Despite her many responsibilities and involvements, Mary is also very involved with the Honors College. I asked her to expound on her experience as an Honors student thus far.

I love that the Honors College has enabled me to take classes and go to events that I had never imagined being able to do. Right now, I am in Melissa Fraterrigo’s “Writing Your Childhood Story”, and I LOVE it! Last week, I got to interview a woman named Pat Smith and ask her all about her childhood. It was a fantastic experience. Just one example of the unique things the honors college has enabled me to do!

I believe it is safe to conclude that the Honors College is very fortunate to have such a fine student as Mary, and we look forward to hearing about all her future experiences and success.
